During the year the number of specimens in the Herbarium has
been increased from 13,689 to 15,069, of which 6,925 are South African
and 8,144 from other countries. All these are poisoned, mounted, and
arranged in botanical sequence on the shelves of the cabinets. Two
additional cabinets have been purchased, and more will be required
before very long.

The list of indigenous plants of Natal alluded to in previous
reports was published in the early part of the year. The expense of
printing was borne by the Botanic Society, the Herbarium Depart-
ment taking over 100 copies at cost price for distribution to botanical
correspondents. Copies may be obtained by the public from the book-
sellers in the Colony. During the short time that has elapsed since
this pamphlet was published, errors and omissions have been dis-
covered and new plants named, a list of which I give below. I pur-
pose continuing this list in future reports, and I may say that I hope
before long, an the assistance of other botanists, to publish a more
complete list, with keys to orders, genera, and species.

It has occurred to me that it may be useful to record the native
names of our indigenous plants, with an indication of the uses to
which they are applied; but I have found much difficulty in compiling
such a list for several reasons. Some plants are known to the natives
by different names, and very frequently different species of the same
genus, or even of allied genera, bear the same name ; as, for instance,
our native ferns, nearly 130 in number, pass under two names only,
or perhaps it would be more correet to say that only two of them have
any distinctive native name. Again, two different species of Crassu/a,
viz., C. rubicunda and C. vaginata, are both known as “ Ekubalo ;” and
there are numerous similar cases,

Many of the medicinal plants of the Colony are known to the
native doctors only, who do not care to give much information about
them ; and though I can obtain from the natives numbers of names, |
am quite unable to identify the plants from the description given,
without specimens, which are but seldom to be obtained. I have
received valuable assistance from Dr. Bridgman and Dr. Nembula, of
the American Mission, for which I desire to express my very hearty
thanks ; and I hope in a future report, with the kind assistance of
those who are in possession of information in the matter, to extend the
list in future reports.

As to the orthography of the native names, I am not in all cases
quite certain, since they have been taken chiefly from the natives, and
I have but a very imperfect acquaintance with the language, in spite
of my upwards of 40 years’ residence in the Colony.

Some of the virtues with which the natives credit the plants are
purely imaginary, while others are no doubt worthy of further investi-

gation. | shall be extremely obliged to any one who will forward to
me information of this kind, accompanied by a specimen of each plant
alluded to, and full directions. for collecting, drying, and forwarding
the specimens will be sent on application. I am, unfortunately, not
in a position to command free postage for letters and parcels of this
kind, but any necessary charge for postage or carriage will be, if
required, refunded to the sender of any such parcels of dried plants.
